Stimulate demand? Hopefully people who are already deep in debt won’t be so stimulated. In order to maintain reasonably full employment we have to flog 25%(?) of what we make to other countries. Also people over consume (ie go in debt) in order to help out as well.
I don’t think we can learn much from The Great Depression which was only resolved by the advent of World War Two. Canadians did not go to war out of patriotism. Rather, for most, it was a matter of putting food on the table.
We have to come to terms with the fact that fewer and fewer people can produce more and more goods. The solution, in my view, is a Guaranteed Annual Income. Everybody doesn’t have to work in order for Canadians to have a reasonable lifestyle. Basically the problem is one of greed. Either people have to be willing to take their head out of the job trough or else be willing to assist those running around the outside squealing.
